In order to contribute to a better understanding of the situation, Secours Catholique-Caritas France – and its Pas-de-Calais branch – wanted to conduct a series of in-depth interviews with these exiles, to be able to gather their testimonies, to better understand their reasons for wanting to reach Britain and to better understand the vagaries of their journeys and their suffering, but also, and above all, their hopes and expectations.
As is always the case when one listens carefully and warmly to men and women in difficult situations, some misunderstandings are revealed. This process of in-depth interviews is no different : the report and analysis that it contains strongly challenge some pre-conceptions that are repeated endlessly by the press and politicians on the “Calais migrants”.
